Yoga is an ancient science which helps to create health and well-being by building awareness, strength, and flexibility in both body and mind. Some of the benefits of yoga include increased concentration, increased self confidence, improved body-image, improved coordination and balance, stress and pain relief, and deeper, more relaxed breathing. All of these benefits apply to children who practice yoga too! Our society puts a great deal of stress and pressure on our children to perform; at school, on the playing field, and in social situations. Little Yogis offers a supportive, non-competitive, non-judgemental and most importantly, FUN environment for your child to learn important skills and to feel good about themselves.

Kids learn best when they are having fun, so Little Yogis classes involve story telling, games, songs, and themes, incorporating yoga poses all at the same time. Your child will learn poses, breathing exercises, and relaxation techniques while they are playing...what a great introduction to yoga!
Many people start practicing yoga for many different reasons. A common reason to start practicing yoga though is for the almost immediate affect it has on our stress levels. It helps us to relax. If one of the reasons why we practice yoga as adults is to stay more balanced and help us deal with the stressors in our lives, why wouldn’t we help our kids discover these benefits too?
This class is all about having fun! Asanas, or yoga postures, will be explored mainly by practicing different animal poses. Your child will pretend to be a lion, a dog, a crab and maybe even a beluga whale! Classes will incorporate themes, simple games, songs, stories and relaxation. While the class is structured, Heather is always open to following your child’s lead. Flexibility is important in so many ways!
At its core, this class is about exploring new things in fun and dynamic ways. Classes are structured to include yoga poses or asanas, themes, stories, games, breathing and relaxation time. During a Little Yogis class your child may experience a trip to Africa, or maybe they will imagine as many underwater animals as they possibly can and then practice these poses. All levels of ability are welcome.
This evening class welcomes budding little yogis to challenge themselves in new ways. While we will still maintain everything that makes little yogis classes fun and exciting, we will begin to hold poses a bit longer and introduce sequences into the class. All levels of ability are welcome.
Heather is available to teach private and semi-private lessons out of your home. These classes are structured in much the same way as the group classes with one main difference, individual instruction. Classes can be tailor made to your child’s ability and interests.
Yoga can be a great activity for already established groups of children. Preschool classrooms, day homes and sports teams are good examples of groups of children who may benefit from a yoga practice. If you work with a group of children diagnosed with special needs and are interested in introducing them to yoga, please contact Heather. Heather has experience working with children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, speech delays and motor impairments.
Ideal for children between the ages of 4 and 10, yoga birthday parties are custom made to the birthday girl or boys theme. Pick a place to travel, maybe Africa, India or the Arctic. Or, pick a kind of animal like dinosaurs, underwater creatures or things that stay awake in the night. Maybe we’ll go to the farm or to the jungle or even back in time! There are 3 easy ways to host a Little Yogis Yoga Birthday Party:
- Yoga Birthday Parties can come to you as long as you can provide a safe space for children to move and have fun.
- Yoga Birthday Parties can be offered out of the Amaryllis Centre in Cochrane Alberta for up to 10 children.
- Yoga Birthday Parties can be offered out of our Calgary Douglas Glen location for up to 7 children.
Our instructor, Heather, has been practicing yoga in Calgary for the past six years. She is a Rainbow Kids Yoga Certified Instructor and was taught under Gopala Amir Yaffe. She has a BA in Psychology and a Child and Youth Care Counsellor Diploma. Heather’s life experiences have led her to pursue a more holistic approach when working with children.
Heather has 10 years of experience supporting children of all ages and abilities in a number of different environments. She has worked as a behaviour consultant for families and children with special needs for six years within the city of Calgary and surrounding area.
Heather swam competitively for a number of years as well as played basketball and beach volleyball at the provincial level. Heather maintains an active lifestyle, practicing yoga, running marathons, backpacking in the Rockies, and training for triathlons.
